Jabal al-Nour & Cave Hira

جبل النور وغار حراء

The Mountain of Light, around 4 km north-east of Masjid al-Haram. In the Cave of Hira near its summit the Prophet ﷺ would retreat for worship, and it was here that Angel Jibreel brought the first verses of the Qur'an: "Read in the name of your Lord who created" (Al-'Alaq 96:1–5).

The climb takes roughly 1–1.5 hours each way. Go early after Fajr, wear good shoes and carry water.

The Hijrah · 622 CE

Jabal Thawr

جبل ثور

South of Makkah. During the Hijrah to Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (RA) sheltered in the Cave of Thawr for three nights while the Quraysh searched for them — the moment remembered in At-Tawbah 9:40: "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us."

Most tours stop at the foot of the mountain; the climb to the cave is steep and long.

Heart of Hajj · 9 Dhul Hijjah

Arafat & Jabal al-Rahmah

عرفات وجبل الرحمة

The plain of Arafat, about 20 km south-east of Makkah, where pilgrims stand in prayer on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah — "Hajj is Arafah." Jabal al-Rahmah, the Mount of Mercy, rises in its midst, and Masjid Namirah marks where the Prophet ﷺ delivered his Farewell Sermon.

Outside the Hajj days the plain is quiet — a moving place to make dua.

Hajj

Muzdalifah

مزدلفة

Between Arafat and Mina. Pilgrims spend the night here under the open sky after Arafat and gather pebbles for the Jamarat. Masjid al-Mash'ar al-Haram stands at the place mentioned in Al-Baqarah 2:198.

Usually seen from the coach on the way between Arafat and Mina.

Hajj

Mina

منى

The tent city about 7 km east of the Haram, where pilgrims stay during the days of Hajj and stone the Jamarat. Masjid al-Khayf, one of Makkah's historic mosques, stands in the valley.

The sea of white, fire-resistant tents is a striking sight even outside Hajj season.

Ihram for Umrah

Masjid Aisha (Tan'eem)

مسجد عائشة

Around 7.5 km north of the Haram, at the edge of the sacred boundary. Aisha (RA) entered ihram here for Umrah during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and pilgrims already in Makkah still come here to put on ihram for another Umrah.

Make ghusl or wudu, change into ihram, pray two rak'ahs and make your intention.

Historic cemetery

Jannat al-Mu'alla

جنة المعلاة

The historic cemetery of Makkah, a short drive from the Haram, where Sayyidah Khadijah (RA) — the Prophet's ﷺ beloved first wife — and many members of his family are buried.

Visit with respect and send salam upon the people of the graves.
